Westmeath is a completely landlocked county. It offers some spectacular beauty and breathtaking views along its many wooded lakeside shores. The two main towns are Athlone and Mullingar, other important towns include Moate, Killbeggan, Kinnegad and Glasson. Located in the heart of Ireland it boasts many attractions.
Boating and cruising on the Shannon, Irelands largest and longest river. Angling on the river and on the beautiful lakes of Westmeath, Lough Ree, Lough Ennel and Lough Owel are but a few. Golf on any of the excellent golf courses. Glendeer award-winning open farm near Athlone gives an agricultural choice to the visitor.
Horse-riding, walking and indoor swimming are some of many facilities.
Also in Athlone is An Dun Heritage and Transport meuseum, Athlone castle and Interpretive centre. Other castles can be found at Tullynally and Tyrellspass where there is a meuseum. The Locke malt whiskey distillery in Killbeggan is thought to be the oldest in the world.
Westmeath derives its name from the Irish language "meath" which means middle. It is home to many bogs. Lough Derravaragh was reputedly the lake where the children of Lir lived for many centuries after being changed into swans by an evil spell.
