1. Impact on Irish Tourism of attacks on US:
------------------------------------------------------------

Following the horrific attacks on the US the Irish tourist sector is bracing itself for a further setback. After only coming to terms with the huge loss of earnings from foot-and-mouth earlier this year and the global economic downturn, the predicted fall-out in the lucrative North American market is expected to put a huge dent in tourism earnings.

Una McCaffrey reported in the Irish Times that Bord Failte forecast big losses as millions of Americans postpone or cancel holidays. According to their statistics, an average of 200,000 North American visitors were booked to holiday in the Republic in the last quarter of this year.

"For the first time in many years, there will be big losses," according to a Bord Fáilte spokesman. "What has happened will further exacerbate a difficult situation."

"US visitors to Ireland are one of our key markets and we will need to assess and review our marketing plans for 2002 as the aftermath of this dreadful tragedy unfolds," said Tourism Ireland chief executive, Mr Paul O'Toole.

Well we have to say it,

UP THE PREMIER.

Congratulations to our hurling and camogie heroes and heroines who showed in fine fashion their determination and ability to be the best at what they do. (An attitude we at Travel Directories Ireland adhere to) Congratulations also due to the Galway footballers after their well deserved win on Sunday. Here's a poem from Peter Howarth to celebrate:

UP FOR THE FINAL

'Twas the day before the All-Ireland
And all of the county were there
Walking the streets around Dublin
With one fellows wife in a tare.

"Just look at the state of your clothing,
All shabby and tied up with string."
Then she looked in an outfitter's window:
"I think I can see just the thing".

The shop was so full of fine clothing
With bargains put out on a rail,
And her eyes passed over the jackets
To a shirt nicely priced in the sale.

The first shirt was too tight for comfort,
The next one was loose, just a bit:
Fifteen and a half round the collar,
Now, that was a beautiful fit.

The shirt had made Tommy look handsome,
"But something is missing," she said,
Until she saw shelves full of headgear:
"A smart looking cap for your head."

He put on the caps in rotation,
The last few, he made several tries
But the one that was seven and three-quarters
Turned out to be the perfect in size.

He looked at himself in the mirror:
A new shirt and cap, he felt proud
And dressed up in Croke Park tomorrow
He'd surely stand out in the crowd.

The assistant, he tried to be helpful:
"For the next time your shopping in town,
I've written your sizes on paper,"
But this made the countryman frown.

"Surely there must be an error,"
Said Tommy beginning to laugh,
"A cap size of seven and three-quarters
And a neck at fifteen and a half."

"I may be a bit of a culchie,
But I think that you have me misled:
Are you trying to say that my neck
Is twice the size of my head?"
